The Land Gardeners use exhibitions and film to help people see soil not as dirt beneath our feet, but as a living system connected to everything around it. Their exhibition SOIL (London, 2025) showed a film tracing connections between Britain’s temperate rainforests and underground fungal networks. When the exhibition travels to Hastings (2026/27), filmmaker Joya Berrow will work with local ecologists to follow those connections out to sea – through coastal soils, kelp and the seabed. Each place the exhibition travels to adds a new chapter to the film, shaped by the ecosystems and people there. Emergence Trust supports the Hastings chapter, including research, filming and public gatherings.

The Land Gardeners use gardens, exhibitions and film to help people experience soil as a living community rather than just the ground beneath our feet. Their London exhibition SOIL (2025) showed a film revealing the hidden relationships between Britain’s temperate rainforests and underground fungal networks. As the exhibition travels to Hastings (2026/27), the film will follow the hidden connections between land and sea. Filmmaker Joya Berrow will work with local ecologists and communities to explore connections between forest floors, fungi, coastal soils, kelp and the seabed. Rather than a finished work, the film evolves with each new location, adding new footage and learning from the ecosystems and people it encounters. Emergence supports the Hastings chapter, including filming and public workshops.
