Modern governance systems are organised around administrative boundaries, while rivers, ecosystems and watersheds are not. We Are Avon is exploring what it would mean to organise a region around a living system instead. Working across the River Avon catchment around Bristol, Bath and the wider Avon Valley, it brings together farmers, community groups, businesses and local organisations to build the foundations of a bioregional economy and governance system. Its work includes regenerative farming networks, local food systems, community stewardship programmes and a growing network of River Guardians who monitor and care for local waterways. Emergence Trust supports the River Guardian programme, which now includes nearly 100 guardians.
