We tend to think culture belongs to humans. Language, traditions, customs and collective memory are often treated as uniquely human achievements. Filmmaker Tom Mustill explores evidence of communication and cultural transmission in other species. His work asks what changes when we encounter animals not simply as nature, but as participants in cultures of their own. Emergence Trust supports Tom to develop film technologies and techniques for discovering and capturing communication between fish. He is using this research to create ‘Pure Joy’, a new kind of film experience that brings animal culture into human storytelling.
