Western psychology often starts with the individual. Climate psychologist Steffi Bednarek starts with relationships. She explores the idea that our sense of self extends beyond the boundaries of our own minds and bodies, shaped by the living, social and organisational systems we are part of. Steffi is developing ways for people and groups to recognise the often invisible patterns that shape how they think and act — from our relationships with the natural world to the expectations of the economies and institutions we live within. But what if organisations could also begin to recognise and question their own patterns? Emergence Trust supports Steffi to develop and test her Systems Wayfinding approach to psychology, exploring whether it can help people and organisations recognise and change the systems they are part of.
